Feeling Unsettled?

Written By Sara Madera

January is never a popular month, but for me this one felt particularly long and soul-crushing with freezing temperatures, illness, and bad news all around. Plus, I know for many people the amount (and speed) of changes coming from the new administration in the last few weeks has been head spinning, especially if it has a direct impact on your work or personal life.

As unmoored as you may be feeling, many companies are feeling the same. And it’s likely that this uncertainty may lead to more layoffs in the future at many organizations, further flooding an already challenging employment market.

All of that to say – if you are looking for a job or have ambitions set on a promotion, it’s a bit of a mixed bag out there. If your energy isn’t being reciprocated right now, feel free to take a breath. (And if you are having success then full steam ahead!)

Either way, it doesn’t have to mean that you put your goals on hold. There are many ways that you can move your plans forward, even during this brief intermission.   You could: Offer to meet your friends for a moment to unwind over a coffee or a drink. They might share about the frustrations they are facing, and you might learn about their challenges (which you may later be able to parlay into an opportunity), but make sure you keep it about them, and not you or the job you are interested in.   Volunteer for an industry group. I have a client in the product management space and she’s putting together tech panels for a non-profit. And yes, she has connected with a speaker who recently interviewed her. Take a deep dive on your resume, cover letter and LinkedIn to make sure your messages are aligned, updated and speak to the role you want.

Finally, make sure to get the support you need, whether by connecting with a therapist, a coach or your community. (Or all of the above!) Right now could be a great time to check in on what’s important to you, what you want out of life, and where to put your energy. If you’re thinking you ready to take the next step, I’d love to help — let’s connect.
