Summer Job-Search Opportunities
By Frances Chaves
Don’t listen to “nay-sayers” who tell you to put your job-search on hold during the summer. Many companies’ hiring activities no longer slow down during the holiday seasons. And applications slow down more than openings do, tipping the balance in favor of those who do apply.
Some companies’ hiring follows their industries’ business cycles; so identify those that ramp up in the summer for the busy fall business season. Companies on a June/July fiscal year are hiring now. Some industries that tend to hire during the summer include airlines, hospitals, and education. Tax specialists are needed for September and October tax deadlines.
As companies look to fill voids left by vacationing permanent employees, opportunities open up at Temp Agencies specializing in senior-level and specialized professionals.
Summer can be a great time to network, so don’t forget to carry your business cards. Use your time at barbecues, parties and on the beach for face-to-face networking. Meet new people and spread the word about your search.
Spend your summer getting your job search materials in order.
Update your social media material. Identify organizations where you would like to work and people who work there. Then reach out and engage them through tweets, conversations, and comments.
PSGCNJ will continue to provide you with training sessions and networking opportunities at our Monday morning general meetings.
So keep your spirits up and make this summer count!
