Try a Job That’s Different From Your Previous One
By Barbara Perone
When it comes to job searching, don’t give up hope – and that’s sure easy to do so in this job market, says PSGCNJ member Lenise Mitchell, who recently landed.
In early September, Lenise began working as a Senior Human Capital Consultant for TriNet, a Professional Employer Organization (PEO). And, she has some advice for those in our group who are still struggling to find suitable employment.
“Perhaps it makes sense to step outside of what we are accustomed to — as I did. This new role for me is one that is quite different from all of my previous roles; however, it still requires me to use my human resources expertise,” says Mitchell, who was part of PSGCNJ’s Membership Committee.
Did PSGCNJ help her in her job search? After being unemployed for 22 months, she admitted that the organization did help her regain her confidence, but, added that “it’s too soon to tell (if PSGCNJ helped me), but, I’ll let you know in the future.”
Lenise says the training she received at PSGCNJ, working on her Challenge-Action-Result (CAR) and Problem-Action-Result (PAR) stories and her 30-second elevator pitch, did help her maintain focus during the interview for her new job; a position she found through a professional organization in her field known as the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). To visit the company’s website, go to www.shrm.org.
During the interview, Lenise says she was able to emphasize the CAR stories that were most pertinent to her new position, which took just three phone interviews and two face- to-face interviews, with higher level Managers, to finally land.
We at PSGCNJ wish you the best of luck in your new position, Lenise! Don’t forget to come back and visit with our active and new members at future networking sessions!
